The link between Psychology and Drama is a barely visible, hugely underestimated and very powerful human resource. Augusto Boal knew this and developed exercises with this link in mind. Though they were still firmly rooted in the theatre, the psychological benefits cannot be ignored.
The uses/benefits of seeing a situation through another persons eyes are already known and are boundless. In essence, this is what acting is all about. Method Acting is nothing more than induced empathy.
Imagine a Drama group in every Community that every person can afford to be a member of. Imagine special shows produced for Schools and Youth Groups with Educational content. Content developed with the input of the Parents. Imagine a place where new Playwrights can have actors read through their work in a performance set up.
PLAZA: A public square or similar open area in a town or city.
Objectives
- To offer a place of fun, diversity, creativity and cultural awareness with full open access to all.
- To facilitate groups and workshops offering fun, friendship and learning in Performance and other areas of the Arts.
- To offer as much of our timetable and as many of our services as possible at a minimal cost, in some cases, free.
- To promote equal opportunities and provide access for all, regardless of financial circumstances.
- To bring Community Members together, and work towards Community Cohesion and Empowerment through the power of performance.
Note: Any classes, workshops or groups detailed below, will be offered a minimum of twice weekly, at differing times, to enable access to all. Additional sessions will be provided as required.
Short Term Aims
- Performance Workshops
Workshop offering drama, games and exercises. Also basic dance and singing..
Great for beginners and anyone wishing to boost their confidence.
- Performance Drama – Plaza Players
This group will perform the annual ‘One Pound Panto’ and T.I.E Workshops.
- Creative Writing
Workshops in many differing styles of writing e.g. Poetry, Essays and Articles.
- Writing For The Stage
The chance to write specifically for the stage and the possibility of seeing it performed.
- Group Guitar – Beginners
A regular group session allowing people to learn Guitar basics e.g. Tuning, Open Chords, Rhythm, Blues and Lead.
Long Term Aims
- Annual ‘One Pound Panto’
Local Communities producing and performing their own 'Pantomimes', under a scheme called, 'The One Pound Panto', enabling every child to see one at least once.
- Regular T.I.E Performances and Workshops
Offering fun and educational workshops to Schools and Colleges.
- The Plaza Choir
From Performances in local Hospitals and Residential Homes, to Carol Singing in the Town Centre.
- Basic Studio Facilities
A multi purpose studio allowing people/bands to write and record their own material and create a ‘demo’ at minimal cost. To promote acting skills through the production of ‘Voice - Over Demo’s’. To promote development of mixing and Studio Engineering skills.
- Visual Arts Workshops - Digital Photography / Animation / Web Design
Creative Photography, Use of Animation software to create Short Films as well as Basic Web Design.
- Regular Showcase Evenings
Held a minimum of four times a year and offering the chance to perform, be it music, drama or comedy, in front of an audience.
- Rap and M.Cing Creative Workshops
Weekly workshops allowing people to learn recording skills through the use of midi recording software and write and record material onto CD or DVD.
- Keyboard Skills Workshop
Learn basic Keyboard skills in a group setting e.g. Theory, Chords, Scales and Songs.
- Internet Showcasing
With our own Web Server we will be able to offer the chance for performers of all genres to showcase their work on the internet.
- Music Share Program
Our attempt to place Instruments into hands that will use them. This program will encourage the donation of Musical Instruments from those who own but do not use them. Under this program, we will also be offering group musical tuition, at minimal cost, using instruments owned by
